What is BPA and does silicone contain BPA?

Bisphenol A, also known as BPA, is an organic compound with the molecular formula C15H16O2. In industry, bisphenol A is used to synthesize materials such as polycarbonate (PC) and epoxy resin. Since the 1960s, it has been used to manufacture plastic (milk) bottles, suction cups for young children, and inner coatings for food and beverage (milk powder) cans.

BPA is ubiquitous, from mineral water bottles, medical devices, and the interior of food packaging. Every year, 27 million tons of plastic containing BPA are produced worldwide. Obesity caused by cancer and metabolic disorders is also believed to be related to this. The European Union believes that bottles containing bisphenol A can induce precocious puberty, and from March 2, 2011, the production of baby bottles containing the chemical bisphenol A (BPA) will be banned.

BPA FREE
Bisphenol A is one of the most widely used industrial compounds in the world, mainly used in the production of various polymer materials such as polycarbonate, epoxy resin, polysulfone resin, polyphenylene ether resin, unsaturated polyester resin, etc.

In the manufacturing process of plastic products, the addition of bisphenol A can make them colorless, transparent, durable, lightweight, and outstanding impact resistance, especially to prevent acidic vegetables and fruits from corroding metal containers from the inside. Therefore, it is widely used in the packaging of canned food and beverages, milk bottles, water bottles, sealants for dental fillers, glasses, and the manufacturing process of hundreds of other daily necessities.

SILICONE STRAW

Next, let's learn more about "silicone"

The basic structural unit of organic silicone products is composed of silicon oxygen links, and the side chains are connected to various other organic groups through silicon atoms. Therefore, in the structure of organic silicon products, there are both "organic groups" and "inorganic structures". This special composition and molecular structure combine the characteristics of organic matter with the functions of inorganic matter.

Inorganic silica gel is an amorphous substance with a chemical formula of mSiO2 · nH2O. Insoluble in water and any solvent, non-toxic and odorless, chemically stable, and does not react with any substance except strong bases and hydrofluoric acid. Organic silicone has basic properties such as low surface tension, low viscosity temperature coefficient, high compressibility, and high gas permeability due to its properties with organic materials. It also has excellent characteristics such as high and low temperature resistance, electrical insulation, oxidation stability, weather resistance, flame retardancy, hydrophobicity, corrosion resistance, non-toxic and odorless, and physiological inertness.

Silicone has non irritating, non-toxic, non allergic reactions to human tissues, and minimal body rejection reactions; It has good physicochemical properties and can maintain its original elasticity and softness during contact with body fluids and tissues, without degradation. It is a relatively stable inert substance. Can withstand high temperatures and be disinfected. Easy to process and shape, easy to carve shapes, and easy to use.

From this, it can be seen that silicone does not contain "bisphenol A".
